'World's Saddest Dog' Finds Friends On Web

Pictures of the pet taken by a passer-by have become an internet sensation after being posted on the photo-sharing website Flickr.

The dog – nicknamed Mr Newman – looks inconsolable as he sits on the pavement tied to a lamp-post with his lead. The photograph was taken outside a café in the bohemian Californian city of San Francisco, which may go some way to explaining why he is dressed in a stylish grey and purple sweater.”He was hanging around looking for somebody to love him. I tried to cheer him up – he seemed happy to me,” said the photographer Chris Michael.

One of the four photos of the dog on Flickr is titled “Tough day for Mr Newman” and captioned: “Despite his cool threads, the girls just aren’t interested in him any more.”Dozens of commenters on the site said they had been touched by the dog’s maudlin gaze. “I come back to see this photo every now and then because it’s too darn cute,” wrote one.

Another viewer said that she had been moved to buy a pug of her own after seeing the photos.Mr Newman may have won the hearts of internet users but his web fame is unlikely to eclipse that of feline rival Keyboard Cat, the musical pet who has become a meme in his own right on YouTube.

How We Know A Dog Is A Dog: Concept Acquisition In The Human Brain

dog as smart as human

A new study explores how our brains synthesize concepts that allow us to organize and comprehend the world. The research, published by Cell Press in the September 24th issue of the journal Neuron, uses behavioral and neuroimaging techniques to track how conceptual knowledge emerges in the human brain and guides decision making.

The ability to use prior knowledge when dealing with new situations is a defining characteristic of human intelligence. This is made possible through the use of concepts, which are formed by abstracting away the common essence from multiple distinct but related entities. “Although a Poodle and a Golden Retriever look very different from each other, we can easily appreciate their similar attributes because they can be recognized as instances of a particular concept, in this case a dog,” explains lead study author, Dr. Dharshan Kumaran from the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at University College London.

Police Find 1,700 Animals In Car

1700 animals in car

Police have discovered 1,700 live animals crammed into the boot of a hatchback car in Bari, Italy, during a routine check. The animals included 216 budgies, 300 white mice, 150 hamsters, 30 Japanese squirrels, six cameleons and more than 1,000 terrapins.

Traffic Police made the discovery when they pulled the vehicle over for a routine car check. The officers were amazed to find the animals in stacked boxes when driver Francesco Lombardo opened the boot. All 1,700 animals were confiscated and sent to nearby zoos while Police investigate the driver for links to animal smuggling.

One of the officers who found the animals said: “He said he planned to sell the terrapins for 20 Euros each which would have made him a fortune.

“There is no doubt those poor animals were suffering in such a small space.”

Ancient And Bizarre Fish Discovered: New Species Of Ghostshark From California And Baja California

new s

New species are not just discovered in exotic locales—even places as urban as California still yield discoveries of new plants and animals. Academy scientists recently named a new species of chimaera, an ancient and bizarre group of fishes distantly related to sharks, from the coast of Southern California and Baja California, Mexico.

The new species, the Eastern Pacific black ghostshark (Hydrolagus melanophasma), was described in the September issue of the international journal Zootaxa by a research team including Academy Research Associates David Ebert and Douglas J. Long. Additional co-authors included Kelsey James, a graduate student at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, and Dominique Didier from Millersville University in Pennsylvania. This is the first new species of cartilaginous fish to be described from California waters since 1947.
