Wildlife Death Toll From Oil Spill Still Uncertain

Federal officials say they don’t know whether a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico killed 189 sea turtles, birds and other animals found dead since it started. The total includes 154 sea turtles, primarily the endangered Kemp’s ridley variety, plus 12 dolphins and 23 birds.

But in a phone news conference Tuesday, officials said they don’t know if any of the animals were killed by oil or the chemicals being used to disperse it.

Barbara Schroeder of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s fisheries program says necropsies have not detected oil in the bodies of the sea turtles.

Pet's Death 'Like Losing A Parent'

human_animal1

To those who have never owned a cat or dog, it might seem impossible to understand.Yet a majority of pet owners admit to finding the loss of their four-legged companion just as traumatic as the death of a beloved relative.Half of owners say it is an event equally as heartbreaking as losing a close family member such as an aunt, uncle or grandparent. And a third go even further, comparing it to the death of a parent, sibling or spouse.

The findings come from a survey of 1,300 British dog and cat lovers. It found that they tend to go on mourning departed pets for years, with 53 per cent saying their grief for their cat or dog ‘never goes away’.More than a quarter of all owners also said that they were so grief-stricken by the death of their pet that they were forced to call in sick to work. On average, bereaved owners cost the UK economy £895million last year in days off work, the survey said.

How To Cope With The Death Of A Pet

PetDeath_004A

Saying goodbye to a beloved pet can be difficult. Many of those who have experienced the death of a pet compare it to losing a family member. Animals provide emotional support, companionship, and unconditional love to their owners, so when they pass away, feelings of sorrow and expressions of grief are normal and should be expected.

Accept your feelings
People often feel that the death of a pet is somehow insignificant or less important than the death of a loved one. Comments such as, “Oh, he just lost his dog” are common. When coping with a pet’s death, however, you must acknowledge the deep grief and profound sense off loss that you feel. Coming home to a quiet house or seeing a pet’s empty bed can trigger feelings of sadness. Do not be afraid to accept and express these negative emotions even when others many see them as trivial.

Help children cope
The death of a pet can be a traumatic experience for children, and long bouts of illness or euthanasia can be even harder for kids to understand. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) recommends having a memorial service to allow children to honor and remember the pet: “Sitting down with the family and sharing memories of your pet can make your children sad – but it can make them laugh, too, and will help your child understand that everyone is feeling the loss as well.”

Abandoned Mini Shetland Pony Rescued From Near-Death

001399481

Who could ever abandon anything as fuzzy and cute as this miniature Shetland pony? Sadly, the U.K.’s Daily Express reports that many horse owners, unable to maintain their expensive animals, have been doing just that.

Lucky for this little guy, now named Stig, a good Samaritan animal lover named Jo Holmes found him in the woods where he was chained to a car seat and near death. A shocked Holmes approached the horse, and “he raised his head,” she told the newspaper. “There was still trust and love in that little pony.”

After being nursed back to the health on a slow diet of hay, Stig has put weight back on and is doing well. He may be tiny, but he’s certainly resilient!

Tearful Goodbye: Baby Elephant Heartbroken Over Mom's Death

baby elephant mom died

It’s never easy saying goodbye to the ones we love, but for one little elephant the pain was just unbearable. In this heartbreaking photo taken Friday, a baby elephant named Jumaane, living near Budapest, Hungary, was distraught following the death of his mother. According to reports, the 2-year-old stayed with Yoki for 14 hours after her death, refusing to leave her side and touching her trunk with his own. The elder elephant, who passed away at Nyiregyhaza Animal Park at age 19, had suffered from complications associated with a tumor in her spleen. When zookeepers finally did remove Yoki’s body from the elephant enclosure, Jumaane was said to be weeping and looking for his mom. We’re sending the little guy lots of love during this tough time.
