Florida Coffee Shop To Sell Cat Poop Coffee

CAT POO COFFER

Local java hounds will get a chance to taste the rarest — and priciest — coffee in the world later this month.
For National Coffee Day on Tuesday, Sept. 29, Bennett’s Fresh Roast in Fort Myers will serve Kopi Luwak coffee. The prized bean from Indonesia is eaten by wild civet cats, passes through the critter’s digestive tract and is collected and processed for brewing.

Yup. They call it “cat-poo coffee” — and it sells for $190 a pound. It’s believed that enzymes in the stomach of the animal add to the coffee’s flavor through fermentation.“Sounds delicious, right?” said Bennett’s owner Bob Grissinger. “It’s been featured in Forbes Magazine, on ‘Oprah’ and in the movie ‘The Bucket List.’ I’ve always wanted to try it, and I figured our customers might be daring enough also.”

The coffee is said to have a rich, heavy flavor with hints of caramel or chocolate.

If cat poo coffee is on your bucket list, it’s going to cost you: Bennett’s plans to sell small samples for $10 and 12-ounce cups for $20 while supplies last. And you thought Starbucks was expensive? The price tag comes from the bean’s limited availability. The average annual production is about 500 pounds, according to Bennett’s.A confirmed coffee connoisseur, Grissinger has been roasting beans and making donuts by hand since he opened shop in early 2008. He does not plan to brew Kopi Luwak on regular basis.“At such a high cost, I don’t believe there is a regular market in our local economy for such extravagance,” he said.
