4 Ways To Show Your Pet Some LOVE

001603435

We know that just like us, you’ll be treating your pet this Valentine’s Day — but you may be unsure of how exactly to show your love. We recently spoke to pet entertaining expert and author Kimberly Schlegel Whitman, to get her advice on feting your furry friend.”I don’t want people to think that Valentine’s Day has to be a huge thing,” Whitman said Wednesday at Chef Michael’s Be My Valentine Doggie Dinner Party in New York. “There are simple ways to celebrate with your pet, and make them feel loved and pampered, by using the acronym LOVE.”

L stands for “lounging around.” “Lay on the sofa, snuggle on the floor, it doesn’t matter where,” Whitman says. “It makes them feel extraordinary, and I think sometimes we forget what an impact that has on them.”

O
stands for “ordering in.” “If you order food for yourself, get your dog an extra-special premium food. … Stay at home and have dinner together!”

V stands for “Valentine’s Day gift.” “Give them a little something to commemorate the day. It helps them know that something special is going on.”

E stands for “extra-special pampering.” “Make them know they look their best, and make them feel their best,” Whitman says. “It’s the simple things.”

LOVE IS A DRUG

Most male mice are happy with just a short moment of passion – a quick knee-trembler behind the skirting board with a partner, and then he’s off. But a male Californian Mouse is the opposite: he seems a perfect mouse-husband who stays in to help groom and feed his mousewife, bringing her water, doing the housework and helping to look after their babies.Proof that he’s fallen head over paws in love? No, simply that the clever female has drugged him.She produces hormones in her urine that he finds intoxicating. Something in his brain is triggered by the scent, and he becomes her slave, working to exhaustion.Sound familiar? It should do. Because love is a drug for humans, too. When we fall in love, our brains swim with opioids – a natural intoxicant from the same class of chemical as heroin – and similarly addictive

7 Tips for Keeping Your Pet Safe This Valentine's Day

001591784

Nothing’s better on Valentine’s Day than getting flowers, truffles and those little heart-shaped candies with the cute sayings printed on them. But for pets, all that romance can be dangerous.

“Around Valentine’s Day, it’s the dogs and cats, rather than birds or other kinds of pets, that get into trouble from things such as lilies and chocolate,” Dr. Louise Murray, Director of Medicine at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in New York City, the most common pet-related dangers lurking on Valentine’s Day and how you can avoid them.

1. Lose the lilies. “My biggest concern is flower arrangements because all lily flowers are extremely toxic to cats and will cause fatal kidney failure,” says Dr. Murray. Even a tiny nibble of any part of the lily plant can be deadly to felines. If you have cats in your home, make sure that mixed arrangements of flowers do not contain any type of lilies and, if they do, pluck them out. “Cats can get almost anywhere,” says Dr. Murray. “And as the lilies wilt the petals can fall off and I’ve seen cats get toxicity that way.” If you think your cat has been exposed to any part of the lily plant, bring them immediately to the vet, Dr. Murray advises.

Biggest Crab Ever Seen In Britain… And It's Still Growing

article-0-083D8146000005DC-472_468x700

With its enormous legs and lethal claws, this monster of the deep is already the biggest crab ever seen in Britain. But astonishingly, the arthropod – which measures a staggering 10ft from claw to claw – is still growing, and could live until it is 100.Nicknamed ‘Crabzilla’ after the fictional giant monster, the Japanese Spider Crab has a body the size of a basketball and its legs can straddle a car. They will eventually measure a massive 15ft.

The crab, called Macrocheira kaempferi in Latin, was caught by fishermen in the Pacific Ocean and has now been imported to Britain where it has gone on display at the National Sea Life Centre in Birmingham.Out of the water, the crab looks limp and languid because it cannot support its heavy limbs. But in its own habitat – up to 2,500ft down in the cold seas of the ocean – it is a lethal predator. However, it also has predators of its own – humans – as it is considered a delicacy in Japan.Graham Burrows, curator of the National Sea Life Centre in Birmingham, said: ‘It is rumoured these crabs can grow to four metres across.’Our open-topped ray tank has the icy cold waters Crabzilla needs, and will be his home until the end of March.
